CoHousing Rooms for Rent

What is Cohousing?

Cohousing is the name of a type of collaborative housing that attempts to overcome the alienation of modern subdivisions in which no-one knows their neighbors, and there is no sense of community. It is characterized by private dwellings with their own kitchen, living-dining room etc, but also extensive common facilities. The common house may include a large dining room, kitchen, lounges, meeting rooms, recreation facilities, library, workshops, and childrens's space. --- From www.cohousing.org/resources/whatis.html

Our cohousing effort in Ames is just starting out, so what we have right now is 2 houses, and a desire to save the enviroment by sharing resources we'd otherwise waste. We are looking for people interested in renting a nice place to live, and be part of this community so we can work for a better way to live.

  • Pet/Child friendly
  • Shared events (movie night, and shared meals once a week)
  • Free wireless internet (as part of the Ames Community Network)
  • Rooms in 2 houses available, washer/dryer, dishwasher (Room layouts)
  • Rent for $350-500 (depending on room) w/all utilities included

Guiding Principles:

  • Higher-density community oriented housing
  • Encourage pedestrian and bicycle commuting (5 blocks from Iowa State Campus)
  • Support locally grown foods, and shared meals
  • Tolerance and respect for others viewpoints, as well as open and honest communication
  • Building a link between short-term students and long-term residents
